Régine Zylberberg, known simply as Régine, was a Belgian-born French nightclub impresario and singer who transformed nightlife culture. Born in 1929 to Polish-Jewish parents, she survived a difficult childhood, hiding from the Nazis during World War II. After the war, she worked various jobs in Paris before opening her first nightclub, Chez Régine, in 1957. Credited with inventing the modern discotheque by introducing DJs instead of jukeboxes, she created a template for nightclubs worldwide. Her venues in cities like Paris, New York, and London attracted celebrities, royalty, and socialites, cementing her as an icon of glamour and entertainment.

In 1975, Régine was photographed by Helmut Newton in the iconic “Regine at Home, Paris,” a striking image that reflects her dynamic personality. Beyond her role as a nightclub pioneer, Régine was a singer and actress known for her vibrant character and contributions to the arts.
