“This is part of the process of making the old … new. Been going through old negatives from many years ago and finding new life in discovering surprises. In “Early Morning”, the camera moved during the shoot, exposing some of the edge of the set. The boy’s mother was Maria, a dear friend and teaching colleague at the Hartford Art School. She lay patiently without budging an inch during the entire shoot. I experimented with the placement of the fish in dialogue with the boy. The title “Early Morning” comes from my childhood, when I would routinely go into my parents’ bedroom to wake them up to play. Being the oldest child, I had no one to play with for the first two years of my life. I remember my parents being amused and slightly dismayed, which I didn’t understand until much later…” – Sandy Skoglund
