For centuries our dreams, fears and desires have been the inspiration for many of the world’s greatest paintings, films, sculptures, works of literature, and photographs. A large part of what makes our lives’ rich, interesting, and dynamic lie in our collective and individual dreams, fears and desires. Photographers choose to present information in a myriad of ways. Their photographs are open to a variety of interpretations and often sustain multiple readings. Since our dreams, fears and desires can be such powerful catalysts in our lives; they have often been a subject of photography throughout its history.
The range of photographs in this exhibition often deliver their impact powerfully, and with an immediacy far greater than we find in narrative or journalistic photography. If the photographs in this show tell stories, they do so instantaneously. Unlike a written story, play, film, or piece of music – the beginning, middle and end are delivered simultaneously in these pictures. They are more akin to the immediate sensations we have in our dreams, fears and desires.
