Berenice Abbott had a tremendously impressive career, working in
portraiture and documentary photography, publishing books on photography
and almost single-handedly preserving the work of French photographer
Eugene Atget.
She studied with Man Ray in Paris in the early 1920s, where she
first took up photography. Upon her return to the United States she
set out to document New York City and the many changes that were
occurring there, working for several social agencies.
In the late 1950s Abbott began photographing in an attempt to illustrate
the laws of physics. She even created her own camera equipment that
would aid in this process. The work of Berenice Abbott represents
a rich diversity of artistic output over many years.
